PHONE: 780 - 942 - 3932 The Redwater Health Centre is a 21 bed accredited facility (14 acute care beds including 1 palliative care bed, and 7 continuing care beds). This facility opened its’ doors on January 1st, 1973 to serve Redwater and the surrounding communities. The Health Centre (acute care and continuing care) employs approximately 95 full-time, part-time, and casual staff in the following departments: Administration, Emergency/Acute Care Nursing/Continuing Care, Lab/X-ray, Health Records, Pharmacy, Admitting, Social Work, Education, Housekeeping, Food Services and Maintenance. The facility is presently served by three full-time physicians (Dr. F. Erasmus, Dr. G. Mouton and Dr. T. Van der Walt), who along with locum physicians provide 24 hour emergency services, seven days a week. Dr. M. Erasmus practices as a part-time physician.
Ambulance Services are provided by Alberta Health Services.
Community Health Services, Home Care and Community Rehab services are also located within the Redwater Health Centre.
The Health Centre strives to provide high quality care and services within the resources available and programs approved by the Alberta Health Services. Other programs offered by our facility include: Palliative Care: Special program designed to provide support and care to those who are in the final stages of an incurable illness. Its goal is not to provide treatment aimed at curing the illness, rather, it is treatment aimed at making the final stages of life the best quality possible. Continuing Care Program: Six Continuing Care beds were opened on March 7, 2006. This project was made possible through the Health Sustainability Initiative (HSI) Government Funding. A seventh Continuing Care bed opened on June 16, 2008. Assessment for Continuing Care services is initiated by a Care Coordinator to determine the resident’s level of care needs and prioritize them for placement in a Continuing Care Facility, or other more appropriate care services. Physical and Occupational Therapy: A Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist visit the site twice a week to assess inpatients and residents for mobility needs and support. Referrals are completed as required, following admission to the health centre.
Respiratory Therapy: Respiratory therapy is provided to inpatients, residents and emergency room patients on a as needed referral basis. Referrals are completed as a part of admission to the health centre, as required. Nutritional Counselling: A dietician is available to provide nutritional counselling for in-patients, out-patients, home care, community and a diabetes education program onsite. Social Worker: The Social Worker is at the Redwater Health Centre on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Services provided: Source of Referral, Assessment, Counselling/Advocacy, Education, Coordination/Liaison, and Follow-Up. Diagnostic Services: Redwater Health Centre – 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday for Lab and X-ray Services. Lab Collection services are also provided for palliative care patients in their homes, if required. Laboratory Requisitions from all regions will be accepted at our facility. Mental Health Services: A Mental Health Therapist provides counselling services one day per week (Wednesdays) at Redwater, either through physician or self-referral. Counselling services include crisis intervention (e.g. suicide risk assessments, urgent assessments); mental illness based counselling such as depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, etc. A Children’s Mental Health Therapist provides counselling for children, adolescents and their families at the Redwater Health Centre on Wednesdays, or more often in response to the needs. Self-referrals, family, school, and physician referrals are welcome.
Appointments for above therapists may be made by calling the Morinville Office - Toll Free when using the Government Rite Number by dialing 310-0000, and then when prompted, put in the area code and number (e.g. 780-939-3388). Optometrist Services: Dr. Barry Nolt, Optometrist opened an office at the Redwater Health Centre in February, 1996. He comes on Tuesday afternoons and provides total optometry services to the residents of Redwater, Thorhild, Radway, Gibbons, and surrounding communities. These services include eye examinations, ocular health assessments, spectacle therapy, and contact lens therapy. Pastoral Care Services: Pastoral Care is provided on request of patients. P.A.R.T.Y. Program: The Redwater and District P.A.R.T.Y. (Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth) Program provides programs at the facility for students from Gibbons, Bon Accord, Redwater, Radway, Thorhild, and Newbrook schools.
Telehealth: Telehealth Technology (an application of videoconferencing to provide services when distance separates each party) is available. Telehealth can be applied to three broad types of activities: Clinical, Education and Administration. Clinical/Student Placements: The Redwater Health Centre accepts Clinical/Student Placements such as RNs, LPNs, Nursing Attendants, Unit Clerks, EMTs, Rehab, Food and Nutrition, Pharmacy. Redwater Home Care offices are located in our facility. Staffing includes RNs/LPNs/Program Assistants and Home Support Aides. Community Health Services: Health Unit Staff – base office is located at the Gibbons Health Unit. Services provided include: Animal Bites Food Issues Environmental Issues Water Issues Food Safety Course Redwater Health Centre Auxiliary: The Health Centre Auxiliary, formed in 1973 provides volunteer services and is our fund-raising organization, with a current membership of approximately 35 members. They also provide patient tray favors for special occasions, conduct kindergarten tours, and provide items for sale in the display case.
